- 1). Examine your flag. If your flag is faded, frayed or damaged, it should be disposed of. You do not need to dispose of flags that have touched the ground or been used on a casket; these flags can still be flown.
- 2). Contact your local American Legion post for information on flag collections. Many American Legion posts schedule annual Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, which is Flag Day.
- 3). Contact your local Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts organization. These organizations also usually perform flag retirement ceremonies.
- 4). Burn your flag in a private, dignified ceremony. You can play a recording of the National Anthem, recite the events the flag has witnessed or discuss the meaning of the flag to add meaning and dignity to the ceremony. If necessary, cut the flag into smaller pieces before burning.
