Wedding Gift Registries - The Basics

103 27
When putting together your wedding gift registry, there are a number of important things to consider in terms of practicalities and etiquette.
In this article, I will provide some tips for planning your registry, and also how to provide the information about your registry to your wedding guests.
First, you should think about what it is that you need.
Traditionally, a couple would use their registry to set up their household together, so a registry would include a number of household items.
This may still be what you need if you are marrying for the first time, and have not lived together.
However, as many couples already live together before they wed or are entering into encore marriages, this tradition is changing.
Instead, they already have a fully set-up household and do not require the sort of gifts that are traditionally required.
Instead, feel free to register for whatever it is that you really need.
If, for instance, you are planning to buy and fix a large house, you could register at a hardware store.
Or, if you are planning to expand your kitchen, you could register at a kitchen store.
Most couples have something they could really use, and the wedding registry is a good opportunity to have those needs met.
Second, give your guests a number of different options on what to give you.
This partly means that you should be sure that your guests will be able to choose between a wide variety of items.
Don't, for example, only register for identical plates or insist that everyone contribute to a single item.
Instead, you should be sure that your guests feel that the gift is "their" gift to you, and they have some options.
It also means that you shouldn't insist that your guests provide you a gift from your registry.
While it is nice of them to do so, they may also choose to give you something else entirely.
At the end of the day a registry is for your guest's convenience, not for yours.
It is a way that they can be sure to get you something that they know you'll want.
However, if they believe you'll want something else, they may do so.
It also means that you should have a variety of prices on your registry.
If everything on your registry is $500 or there are only a few items below that, your guests won't buy you gifts from it.
Instead, allow your guests, especially those who do not have a great deal of money, to purchase something in their price range.
If you have a number of inexpensive gifts (such as silverware), guests will often buy multiple presents.
