What are corns and calluses? Corns and calluses are hardened areas of skin found on the feet (mostly on the toes), and sometimes on the hands and fingers.
The appearance of corns is that of tough layers of compacted, dead skin cells.
The central area may also contain something called a redix, which is triangular in shape and points inward.
The affected region may also be yellow in complexion.
What causes corns on toes? Corns and calluses are caused when overactive keratinization occurs in an attempt to protect the skin from excessive pressure or friction from the skin rubbing against boney areas of the toes.
Footwear that is too tight or poorly fitting can result in the presence of corns and calluses by placing pressure on areas causing friction between the skin and the bone.
Calluses may also form as a result of abnormal bait or foot structure (such as bunions or hammertoes).
Weight gain can also be a contributing factor to corn growth.
Corns and calluses are not contagious and are found in all age groups.
Additionally, deficiencies in vitamin A, vitamin E, and potassium will encourage the growth of corns on the feet and toes if the individual is at risk of getting corns.
Goals of therapy Relieve symptoms such as irritation and pressure on the area will allow for natural healing.
Identify and remove the cause of the lesions so that it may regress.
Finally, prevent recurrences with proper treatment and prevention for corns.
There are many over the counter preparations that are now available for improving the lives of those who suffer from corns and calluses on their feet.
Products that help shave off the layers of dead skin to products containing salicylic acid that van burn away the corns at the source have been widely tested.
Some of these products have received excellent reviews for successfully removing corns on toes and feet.
