Milford Haven is in the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire.
It is the county's largest town in terms of population.
Milford-Haven has one of the largest natural harbours in Britain and this asset has been the mainstay of the economy since the inception of the settlement.
In the 18th century, whaling was an important economic activity and fishing was the most important industry right up the mid 20th century.
After the decline of fishing in the 1950's the trawlers began to disappear from the port but new oil refineries soon took their place and the energy sector became a major employer in Milford-Haven from the 1960's.
The economy of Milford Haven has experience quite a boom and bust history.
The decline of t he fishing whaling and fishing industries were not the first blows.
Towards the end of the 20th century the oil sector began to slump and Milford Haven was particularly hit with unemployment.
There is a new boost expected to that sector in the near future when the planned Liquefied Natural Gas works is built and comes into operation.
Fortunately, Milford Haven has a few alternative industries to fall back on.
The ports and docks and also the new marina all provide employment.
Another growing industry is tourism.
Milford Haven forms part of the magnificent Pembrokeshire coastline which attracts thousands of tourists every year.
Many travellers use Milford Haven as a base while touring the coastline.
As such many hotels and guesthouse operate in the town.
Milford Haven has many attractions and leisure amenities which keep the visitor entertained in their own right.
Milford Haven Waterway is a popular leisure haunt.
This is the estuary upon which Milford Haven is built and the largest in Wales.
The inlet from the sea is sheltered and this natural asset is why Milford was described as a Haven, centuries ago.
Today this little sanctuary provides the necessary seclusion for boating and water sports.
