The Greatness of Jesus
WE BADLY need somebody like Jesus to guide us in working towards the welfare of mankind. But unfortunately we have none. Had Jesus been in our midst today, how would he have reacted to the sins of corruption and terrorism, which pervade the world? Similar thing can happen when the robber Ratnakar came under the influence of Lord Rama and became a saint and ultimately wrote the epic Ramayana. If some of the terrorists come under his influence, then gradually the world may become a better place to live in.
Some people may argue that in today’s world, it is impossible to follow all the principles that Jesus stood for. But if we can adhere to even 50 per cent of the principles he stood for, the world will become a much better place. Jesus implored the god to forgive his detractors and this is easily one of his most outstanding acts. Few people can boast of such magnanimity. In today’s world, everyone seems to be interested in an ‘eye for an eye’ policy. Even slapping a person can snowball into a war. Some feel that if they are beaten up and even killed, then it amounts to a defeat. However, this is not always the case. Even Jesus had to bear this ordeal but today the whole world worships him. But how many worship his detractors? There are people like Osama Bin Laden who took many people’s lives. But who is concerned about him? This proves how significant forgiving is and what a sin killing innocent people is. I am really fond of this quote of Jesus: "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?" So many people, who are so concerned about the materialistic world, must remember the value of soul.
Many legends have drawn inspiration from Jesus. Our very own MK Gandhi is the best example. This is what Gandhi said: "I can say that the historical Jesus never interested me."
Nothing would change for me if someone proved that Jesus never lived and that the Gospel narration was a fictitious story, because the message of the Sermon on the Mount would always remain true for me.” Even Swami Vivekananda was motivated by him. Christ unveiled the truth, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." A heroic echo was heard in Vivekananda: "It is already yours... It is yours by right."
Some may wonder why the god died on such a tragic note. It is said, if one has some good deeds to show against his name, his death will not be painful. Jesus faced a painful death because he volunteered to pay for the actions of sinners so none would suffer for the sins committed. Also by choosing such a death, he sent across a clear message: the message of love and forgiveness.
Comparing divine people life Jesus and Buddha is akin to comparing different branches of the same tree. They all spread religion and love. Their message was one and the same, viz, to attain god. Jesus was an incarnation of god as were people like the Buddha and Mahavira.
