Block paving adds a colorful and geometric design to patios, walkways and driveways. With time, dirt can darken or dull the color of the blocks. Plants will sprout up between the paving stones, spreading weeds. To get rid of these unsightly aspects, use various tools to clean block paving. For best results, clean your block paving at least once a year. - Brooms sweep away loose debris.broom image by L. Shat from Fotolia.com
Before you start using water and other moist substances to clean block paving, brush away loose debris and dirt with a stiff broom. Brush it into your lawn or use a dust pan to pick it up and throw it away. Getting rid of loose dirt with a broom will make cleaning much easier. - Stiff bristles can withstand pressure against rough stone.brush image by pjOn from Fotolia.com
Dip a stiff bristle brush into a bucket of soapy water. Rub the brush on the paving to get rid of most dirt. You can use a push broom for this, but it's easier to get rid of hard-to-remove dirt with a hand brush. Use a small cushion to protect your knees as you rub. - A power washer will remove dirt caked deep into the block paving.Block paving image by Andris Daugovich from Fotolia.com
Power washers use pressurized water to blast away dirt caked into block paving. They also work well for clearing out debris and weeds from between blocks. This option is especially good for people who can't spend time on their knees scrubbing at the paving as most power washing can be achieved standing up. The Block Paving website suggests you keep the power washer nozzle at least eight inches away from the paving at all times. - Weeds make block paving unsightly.weed image by Sandra Henderson from Fotolia.com
Weeds and algae find their way between the block paving and can spread over the patio or walkway. Some home owners prefer to keep these weeds as they add an aged, overgrown look to the garden. If you want to clear them out, use a standard weed killer. Leave the chemicals for the time indicated on the packaging. Brush or power-wash the debris away once the plants have died. - Sealant covers the porous stone comprising block paving.brick image by chrisharvey from Fotolia.com
Paving sealants prevent mold and algae from forming. Acrylic sealants are best for residential areas according to the Paving Expert website. Power-wash the paving two to three weeks before applying the sealant to get rid of surface dirt. Ensure that the paving is completely dry just before sealant application and that there is no rainy weather in the forecast for the next few days.
