Resolving Conflict Management - A Few Techniques
Often, intense emotions like jealousy and anger are involved in conflicts which make it difficult to reach a resolution. Resolving conflict management aims to settle disputes harmoniously and to achieve that, there are several activities that can resolve the disagreements. Some of these activities are quite popular and easy to do as well.
Conflict brainstorming
This group activity requires the participants to start thinking constructively about the conflict and arms them with the tools needed so that future conflicts can be dealt with accordingly. The leader needs to prepare a list consisting of possible conflict scenarios that will be similar to those that the participants might be facing. A scenario is then announced after which catalogue of possible solutions must be made by the participants. After there are as many solutions on the paper as they can think of, votes are cast on the most appropriate solution. With the announcing of another conflicting scenario, this process is repeated.
Anger ball toss
This simple game meant for children allows children to communicate about things that upset them. The participants gather in a circle, something is stated by the game leader that angers him. A foam ball is then tossed to a participant who has to describe something that angers him. The ball is then thrown by that player to another and in this manner, the game goes on. This continues till the ball is caught by everyone at least once. This announcing of anger sources in simple plain words helps children in understanding one another.
Peer mediation
This resolving conflict management technique involves impartial trained peers who help the parties in their discussion of problems amicably and offer guidance towards acceptable resolution. They cannot make any decisions on behalf of the disputants. They can only facilitate the discussion so that the resolution made is totally the effort of the conflicting parties. This is quite favorable as people are more receptive to their peers and satisfaction is more likely as the resolution is the result of their own discussions and is not forced upon them.
Disclosure
These activities are meant to encourage team members so that the whole group gets some personal information. This helps in the development of a sense of trust and bonding. One such activity involves passing around of toilet paper roll by the team members and each tearing off strips. With everybody having one, they must tell something about themselves - one for each square taken.
Human knot
This exercise is a problem-solving and collaboration activity which helps in the fulfillment of some common goal. Everyone must stand in a circle and, with their right hand, grasp the right hand of other people as if shaking hands with them. With the right hand holding still, the left hand of somebody else is taken hold of. They have to now untangle themselves so that they can return to the previous position i.e. a full circle.
Graffiti boards
Team rapport is effectively built by expressing appreciation for each other. This exercise meets this exact goal. Some colored markers and pens and a cardboard sheet are given to all. Each must write their names and the edges must be drawn with a border. With the boards hanging around the room, the team members can wander around and write appreciative messages on them. This helps in resolving conflict management effectively.
