How to Decorate a Simple Birthday Cake
- 1). Spread a thin layer of frosting over the entire surface of the cake with a spatula. Do not worry about even coverage. This first coat just seals in the crumbs so that they will not show later. Put the cake in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until the frosting has hardened.
- 2). Spread an even layer of frosting of your desired thickness over the top and sides of the cake. Use the spatula to either smooth out the frosting or to create a pattern of strokes or wavy shapes.
- 3). Mix a few drops of food coloring of the birthday celebrant's favorite color into the remaining frosting. Add more if needed to make a more intense color.
- 4). Spoon the colored frosting into a plastic bag and push it all down toward one corner. Cut off the very tip of the corner of the plastic bag. The opening should measure no more than 1/8 inch across.
- 5). Draw a design, or write a note, on the cake with the colored frosting. For example, a note could read, "Happy Birthday Diana!" or, "Celebrating 35 Years!"
- 6). Cut off more of the corner of the bag so the opening is about 1/2 inch in diameter.
- 7). Pipe the frosting around the edge of the cake to make a border.
- 8). Decorate the cake with unwrapped candies. Some ideas include making a polka-dot cake with round candies, using small candies to spell out words or create a design and cutting shapes out of sheets of fruit-flavored candy.
- 9). Place a few small figurines on the cake if you have some that fit the party theme or the birthday celebrant's interests. For example, if the party is for a child who enjoys race cars, put a few small cars on the cake to decorate it.
