    Weatherstrip Doors

    • 1). Clean the door jamb thoroughly with a cloth and soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 2). Measure the sides, top and bottom of the door using a tape measure to determine how much self-adhesive foam weatherstripping you'll need to cover the entire door jamb.

    • 3). Cut enough self-adhesive foam to fit each side, the top, and bottom of the door using a utility knife.

    • 4). Peel the backing from the self-adhesive foam and press it adhesive side down onto the sides, top, and bottom of the door jamb. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the foam weatherstripping should be applied in one continuous strip along each side of the door jamb (as opposed to several pieced-together strips). Be sure that the weatherstripping connects tightly at each corner of the door jamb.

    • 5). Measure the bottom width of the interior side of the door using a tape measure. Once you have the measurements, cut the door sweep to size using a hacksaw.

    • 6). Close the door, then place the door sweep against the bottom of the door, making sure the flap side of the sweep is facing the door and the bottom of the sweep is resting on the floor.

    • 7). Attach the door sweep to the bottom of the door by screwing several Phillips-head screws into the holes in the door sweep using a cordless drill or screwdriver.

    Weatherstrip Double-Hung Windows

    • 1). Clean the bottom of the window sash thoroughly with a cloth and soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 2). Measure the bottom width of the window sash using a tape measure, then cut the self-adhesive foam weatherstripping to size using a utility knife.

    • 3). Peel the backing from the self-adhesive foam and press it adhesive side down onto the bottom of the window sash.

    • 4). Clean the window jamb thoroughly with a cloth and soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 5). Measure the length of the window sash sides using a tape measure. Once you have the measurements, add an additional inch to each sash height, then cut two strips of V-channel weatherstripping to that size using a utility knife.

    • 6). Peel the backing from the V-channel weatherstripping and press it firmly between the window sash and jamb.

    • 7). Hammer finishing nails through the weatherstripping into the window jamb to hold it securely in place, making sure the sash doesn't catch on the nails.

    • 8). Clean the back of the bottom window sash thoroughly with a cloth and soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 9). Measure the width of the bottom window sash using a tape measure, then cut a piece of V-channel weatherstripping to size using a utility knife.

    • 10

Raise the window sash 3 to 4 inches, then peel the backing from the V-channel weatherstripping and press it firmly into the back of the window sash, making sure the V opens facing upward once the window is closed.

    Weatherstrip Casement Windows

    • 1). Open the window and clean the outside of the window stops thoroughly with a cloth and soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

    • 2). Measure the sides, top, and bottom of the window stops using a tape measure to determine how much self-adhesive foam weatherstripping you'll need, then cut weatherstripping to size to fit each of the sections.

    • 3). Peel the backing from each piece of self-adhesive foam and press it adhesive side down into the outside of the window stops.
