How to Open & Reset a Garage Door When the Power Fails

104 30
    • 1). Unplug the garage door opener motor. Pull the disconnect lever so that you can open the door manually. There should be a red lever, or a cord with a red pull chain. When you pull this chain you should hear a click, which means that you can now lift up the garage door on the track without damaging the motor.

    • 2). Open the garage door. There should be handles near the base of the garage door and you will need to pull them upward. Make sure that you change your grip as the door rises so that you can push it all the way up.

    • 3). Reset the garage door. Plug in the motor, or if there was a power failure wait for the power to come back on. Once the motor is on and running again, all that's left to do is to reconnect the door with the drive chain. Push the garage door opener and you'll hear the pulley engage. Slowly push the garage door open manually until you hear the click as it engages with the chain again. The motor will then raise the garage door up as before, and the system is reset.
