Life Before Facebook

103 1
Are you on Facebook? Have you been asked this question more times than you can remember in the past 6 months? It seems that more and more people between the ages of 40 and 65 are joining Facebook.
Do you remember what your life was like before Facebook? I know that I personally spend way too much time checking my profile to see who's either commented on my post, photo(s) and/or sent me a message.
It seems to bring on a narcissistic type thrill when one comments on one of your posts and/or photos.
Truly, who really cares what I'm thinking at any one given moment?? Please don't get me wrong, I do feel that FB is a great forum for opening up discussion on political and social issues.
Let's not forget though that before FB we would email our political/social ideas around to our email contacts.
I would now like to talk about the issue of " friends" on FB.
How many of you who have a FB account would REALLY be " friends" with even 1/4 of the " friends" on your page in the " real world?" I know that the vast majority of the people on my " friend" list are NOT ones that I would ever pick up the telephone ( yes, that old archaic thing) to have a conversation with or invite to a party.
Facebook is akin to a high school reunion that never ends! Picture this, at a 20 or 30 year high school reunion you smile, say hello and go over what you've been doing for the past several years and then you move on to the next person.
Usually you leave after the reunion and MAYBE keep in touch with a couple of people that you talked to that night.
Here is where FB is like a reunion but also very, very different.
So on Facebook you typically start out with a handful of " friends.
" Every few days or so somebody else finds your profile on FB and asks you to " friend" them.
Usually these people are from your past and not anybody that you have kept in touch with.
In order to not be rude you usually say " yes" to the " friend" request.
So now you're friends with people who you would not have purposely sought out.
These " friends" can now see who all of your " friends" are and in a voyeuristic fashion view your photos and see your causes and groups.
FB seems to suck you in and then as you spend more and more time on it you get stuck in a web that seems very difficult to get out of.
It is fun to see people on there that you haven't seen in several years but then once you've caught up with them then what is left to connect over.
Keep in mind that at a reunion you can catch up and then leave and shut the door so to speak.
Have you ever noticed on FB how many married people are on there and " friends" with single and/or other married people of the opposite sex? This scenario seems to me to be a set up for affairs to start.
How many old loves have found each other through FB? O.
K.
, if they are 2 single individuals it's a beautiful thing but that is not always the case! Just today there was a story on " Good Morning America" ABC about how dangerous FB can be.
There have been several reports of people's homes getting robbed after they posted information about going away on vacation or simply saying on a post " I'm going shopping today for the entire afternoon.
" Dangers also lurk when teen aged and preteen kids post pictures of themselves and their first and last names and where they go to school! What started out to be a social network for college aged students has turned ugly!! Don't say I didn't warn you! Be careful!
