How to Conduct a Needs Analysis With Bloom's Taxonomy

    • 1). Analyze the students' knowledge. This pertains to the basic recall of facts and concepts.

    • 2). Examine the students' understanding. Understanding is the second element of the taxonomy and relates to "the lowest level of real understanding," according to Kansas University.

    • 3). Evaluate the students' competence in application. Application refers to the ability to take knowledge gleaned from one source and apply it to another, and to make connections between different points of information.

    • 4). Evaluate the students' analytical skills. Analysis makes up the fourth component of the taxonomy and relates to students' ability to digest, process and draw conclusions from information using their reasoning and critical thinking skills.

    • 5). Analyze synthesis, which is the ability to combine two or more elements (ideas, facts, etc.) into something new.

    • 6). Examine students' evaluation abilities. Evaluation, as defined by Bloom's taxonomy, is "the use of a standard of appraisal [and] making judgments about the value of ideas, materials or methods within an area."

    • 7). Develop an evaluation of the students' needs based on their capabilities in each of the six areas of Bloom's taxonomy.
