The free section will give you a list of the best and worst vehicles based on gas mileage, among other features. These sites will also have information, such as safety ratings and interior features. However, you do have to subscribe to the site to view many of their pages that involve the details of each vehicle.
- 2). Create a list citing make and model of all the SUVs you can think of. This may require a little research, but once you have a list, you can search each individual make and model using the Internet. Many times you can find gas mileage information through the dealership site or from owners of the vehicles on car forums. This is also a handy way to bypass purchasing a subscription to Consumer Reports. People will sometimes post what was printed on its website.
- 3). Visit a dealership in person. Talk to a car salesman and tell him you are interested in SUVs and are wondering how the various models compare in gas mileage. He can provide detailed information, because he keeps specific information on each car his company sells. You may choose to visit more than one dealership.
- 4). Calculate the mileage yourself if you have the access to one or more SUVs. To calculate gas mileage in a vehicle, write down your odometer reading or set your odometer to zero the next time you fill up. Drive until it's time to fill up again, and subtract the new odometer reading from the last, or write down the odometer reading if you set it at zero. Divide that number by the number of gallons it takes to fill up your vehicle. This is the miles per gallon your vehicle gets. You can use this number to compare to other vehicles.
