How to Discover Your Niche

104 5
    • 1). Ask yourself what you're passionate about. If you enjoy reading books and writing about them, then look into becoming a book reviewer for your local newspaper. If you're passionate about helping others with their finances, then try a career in banking or credit counseling.

    • 2). Talk to family and friends. Your parents may advise you to enter a legal career if you have a strong knowledge of how the law works and you know how to persuade others to believe what you're saying. Or a friend may point out your weakness in public speaking and advise you to work behind the scenes rather than in front of the camera.

    • 3). Practice your skills. It's important to continually build on your natural abilities by practice and learning more about your craft. For example, if you want to improve your comic drawing skills, spend some time each day studying your favorite comics and working on your unique style.

    • 4). Find new activities. This will help you discover your niche if you're not sure what it is. Attend some free cooking classes at your local community center or volunteer your time at a local hospital. Maybe you'll find that you have the creativity to be a chef or the patience and concern for others that is needed for a medical career.

    • 5). Talk to your campus career counselor. He or she may give you a self-assessment quiz to determine your strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the quiz, the counselor would discuss the results with you and talk about possible career options based on your answers.
