How to Remove Rust From Cast Iron
- 1). Start with a potato and slice it in half.
- 2). Sprinkle the top of the potato with Barkeeper's Friend. Barkeeper's Friend is a product that can be easily found in most grocery stores or drug stores. If you are not able to locate it, any scouring powder will work.
- 3). Scrub the area that is covered in rust with the potato. Periodically check the bottom of the potato. When it seems to have turned a grayish or blackish color, you will want to cut the potato to expose a fresh surface. Coat once again with Barkeeper's Friend and continue scrubbing.
- 4). Once you are done scrubbing, rinse and dry thoroughly.
- 5). Coat the entire surface, front and back, with a thin layer of vegetable oil. This will begin to re-season your pan and protect it from rusting.
