How to Make a Sweater Out of Felt
- 1). Place 2 yards of felt from a 54-inch roll in a mesh bag and tie the strings shut. Wash the felt in the mesh bag in a washing machine with hot water and dry on high heat to remove extra fuzz from the felt and soften it. Remove the felt from the bag and throw out the wads of fuzz left in the bag.
- 2). Lay the felt on a flat surface and place the pattern on top. Pin the pattern into place and cut around the lines. Use sharp scissors to avoid snagging the felt. Remove the pattern and pin the pieces together following the pattern directions.
- 3). Place a piece of newspaper on both sides of the felt to prevent fuzz from the felt clogging the sewing machine. Load the sewing machine with quilting thread or another heavy-duty thread in a color that matches your felt. Use a size 6 to 9 universal needle. Set the stitch length to 2.5 mm. Test the settings on a piece of scrap felt to make sure they are correct. If the felt bunches, adjust the tension knob to a slightly lower number and test again.
- 4). Sew your seams following the pattern's directions. Since felt does not have a right side and wrong side, pay careful attention to ensure your pieces are facing the right way before you sew them.
- 5). Remove the newspaper after sewing each seam. Tear it away along the seam and roll a lint roller along the thread to remove any small bits that are left behind.
- 6). Iron the sweater on a medium heat to remove any wrinkles and to press the seams.
