Wings by Aprilynne Pike
Wings is a fairy tale.
Truly, a fairy tale.
It is about a young girl called Laurel, who suddenly sprouts wings on her back.
It is very much a fantasy story, but one that is set in a recognizable setting; contemporary California.
Here, Laurel quickly comes to find out her true heritage, and why she is different from those around her.
Growing up in Orick, a small Californian town in the middle of the redwood forests, Laurel is home-schooled by her parents and rarely meets other people.
This all changes when she moves to Crescent City, and suddenly has to start school for the first time.
Despite this setback, she settles in quite well, and becomes good friends with a boy named David.
Sparks start to fly between the two but then a boy named Tamani enters the scene.
Tamani is a fairy just like Laurel, and reveals to her why she was put on earth; to protect her parents home which acts as a gateway to their world.
Laurel is now torn between the caring and friendly David, and the exciting and exotic Tamani, as she fights to figure out her new role in the world.
This book very much deals with the theme of growing up.
Laurel, while going through these changes, is starting to realize what it means to become responsible, and to have to make difficult choices.
When you throw in a couple of love interests, it really becomes a book that you just can't put down.
This sounds like quite a standard formula and thus I was initially hesitant about reading Wings but I soon discovered that it is not like a normal book for young people, it is quite thrilling and the imaginative use of language helps build new worlds in the reader's mind.
There are some parts where I thought the dialogue was a little under-developed, but it is nothing major.
This is not the end of Wings, either.
A new book has been announced and in total there will be four books in the series.
It is quite rare for me to look forward to a book, but as I have already said, the unique style of writing and developed characters make this no ordinary book.
