    • 1). Unplug the Hoover upright vacuum cleaner's power cord from the wall outlet if it is plugged in. Turn the Hoover over so that the bottom now is facing up. Remove the screws from the bottom plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the bottom plate off.

    • 2). Pull the brush/roller assembly out of the bottom. Pull the agitator belt off of the hubs around which it is wound. Place the assembly and belt aside. Remove the screw from each end of the filter housing with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the housing out from the bottom and place it aside.

    • 3). Remove the screws from around the motor housing that is inside the bottom of the vacuum cleaner. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws. Remove the two screws from the bottom of the handle with the Phillip screwdriver. Pull the handle off the vacuum cleaner and place it aside.

    • 4). Lift the motor housing carefully out of the bottom of the vacuum cleaner so to not break off the connected wiring. Place the housing next to the bottom of the vacuum cleaner.

    • 5). Shine a flashlight into the bottom of the vacuum cleaner, beneath the area where the motor housing was located. Find the spool that the rewind cord is wrapped around. Push the spool clockwise and then counter-clockwise to loosen the cord. Pull the cord gently out from the back of the vacuum cleaner.

    • 6). Shake a can of lubricating spray for five seconds. Spray the spool with a two second burst of the can.

    • 7). Blow out the hole where the cord exits the back of the vacuum cleaner with compressed air. Shake the can of lubricating spray for five seconds and spray the hole with a two second burst. Pull the rewind cord all the way out of the vacuum cleaner.

    • 8). Reverse the disassembly process to put the Hoover upright vacuum cleaner together. Tug the cord to engage the rewind process. Feed the cord into the back of the vacuum cleaner until the plug stops up against the back.
