It Was Only a Small Business, But Everything Was Covered
Some years ago, I faced losing my job, and was eventually made redundant.
So, in spite of having a mortgage to pay, I decide to go back to college for a couple of years.
Money was tight though, so in the Summer vacation, I knew I'd have to find temporary work.
I scanned the local papers for something that might interest me.
That said, I knew I'd have to take anything I could find, as the mortgage company was getting impatient.
I went for an interview at a local highway services, which was in the process of opening up a motel.
But all that did was prompt me to keep looking! "but you've little choice" I told myself.
I scanned the classifieds once more.
I knew there had to be something out there for me.
Something that could help me pay my bills and be fulfilling and secure.
So I kept searching until I found a great job opening.
I spotted a local company which needed a driver to deliver painted metal products.
As it was only 15 minutes walk from my house, I took the opportunity to call in.
Explaining my situation, I was offered temporary work.
I had anticipated driving a small van locally, but had rather a shock when I was shown to a 7.
5 tonne lorry.
It's the largest vehicle that one can legally drive on a standard license - depending upon which country you live in, of course.
I was initially daunted by the prospect of jumping into the truck - then driving up to a couple of hundred miles across the country to do pick-ups and deliveries.
However, I got on with it and actually rather enjoyed the peace of being in the cab by myself; just me and my thoughts for my future.
It didn't matter if I became stuck in traffic in some of the busier towns, as I was being paid by the hour, not the distance.
There were days when there was nothing to deliver or pick-up, and then rather than go home, I'd just help out in their small factory.
There was one thing I did ask - and that was their position with legalities in the event of an accident.
I was assured, and shown, their documentation.
It was all fine and in order.
I also saw that they were associated with a truck accident lawyer, which served to boost my confidence.
