Kreator, Accept and Swallow The Sun Concert - September 26, 2012

Two Teutonic titans, Kreator and the newly reinvigorated Accept, invaded Los Angeles on an early autumn evening. Both bands are touring in support of monstrous new releases, Phantom Antichrist from Kreator, and Stalingrad from Accept, and it was only fitting that these countrymen would team up for a massive tour, detonating at the Avalon Theater in the middle of fabled downtown Hollywood.

Rounding out the evening's lineup would be Finnish melodic doom merchants Swallow The Sun, themselves touring in support of an excellent new release in the form of Emerald Forest And The Blackbird.

Swallow The Sun

Swallow The Sun got things going at about 6:30pm, an early start to a show that would ultimately let out just before 11pm (the Avalon turns into a dance club afterwards). The Avalon was already filling up as Swallow The Sun delivered a good set lasting about 45 minutes or so. Wasting no time with any stage banter, Swallow The Sun took every opportunity to present songs from their well regarded new album, in particular the title track, “Hate, Lead The Way!” and “Cathedral Walls.”

Swallow The Sun

Although a good band on record, Swallow The Sun’s style noticeably clashed with the anthem oriented traditional metal of Accept, and the all out thrash metal assault of Kreator. Consequently, Swallow The Sun were a bit static on stage, but were appreciated by the crowd, nonetheless.

Accept

The mighty traditional metal warriors Accept have undergone a massive resurgence with two excellent recent albums in Blood Of The Nations and Stalingrad. The addition of former TT Quick vocalist Mark Tornillo has done wonders for the band, and anticipation was high as the crowd eagerly awaited a massive dose of anthems, riffs, and a fun time for all.

Accept are serious professionals, no question, with a stage presence that only true veterans can display.

Obviously greatly enjoying their resurgence to the fullest, Accept delivered a massive 90-minute set filled from top to bottom with favorites, both old and new.

Accept

Although a good portion of the crowd was made up of kids, those kids joined the older fans, who were also out in force, in shouting along to such classics as “Restless And Wild,” “Metal Heart,” and “Breaker.”

New tracks were featured, as well, as Accept treated the crowd to rousing renditions of “Teutonic Terror,” “Pandemic,” “Hung, Drawn, And Quartered” and “Stalingrad” amongst others. Accept completely brought down the house with the one-two closing punch of “Fast As A Shark” and “Balls To The Wall.” Wow!

Make no mistake, Accept would be a really hard act to follow on this night, but Kreator are also seasoned veterans; therefore, Mille Petrozza and company were more than ready. Although seemingly a bit tired in the early going, Kreator soon warmed to the task and put on a 90-minute set that was the equal of Accept. Also delivering a set filled top to bottom with classics, new and old, the roaring crowd response to Kreator was massive as a huge pit opened up on the spacious floor of the Avalon from the get go.

Set highlights included “Extreme Aggression,” “Phantom Antichrist,” “Phobia,” “Violent Revolution,” and older gems such as “Pleasure To Kill,” and, in particular, “Endless Pain.” Mille even encouraged the crowd to set up a Wall of Death, so to speak, as an introduction to “Endless Pain,” and the Los Angeles metal horde went absolutely nuts. By the time Kreator closed with “Flag Of Hate and “Tormentor,” the crowd was thoroughly spent after a massive night of metal!

Overall

As far as metal concerts go, you really can’t ask for much more from veteran bands, bands still going after so many years. Kreator and Accept know exactly what their appreciative fans expect, and are able to deliver with the enthusiasm of bands half their age.
