- 1). Remove any debris (grass, rocks or stones) around the area where the steps will be. This area will be landscaped with a flower bed, so it is necessary to clean it thoroughly.
- 2). Place the steps with a comfortable amount of room for the average step size. Provide a width of approximately a foot and a half between each step in the planting area. Make sure the steps are in the correct position before you begin to dig.
- 3). Use a rotary tiller or a pitch fork to loosen the soil in the planting bed. If it is needed, add compost or black dirt to the soil. Use a rake to even out the ground in the planting bed.
- 4). Remove the steps one at a time and dig the soil beneath it to allow for a firm fit in the ground. Pack the dirt as tightly as possible under the stone to minimize sinking.
- 5). Return each step to its respective hole. You may want to leave the step's top edge protruding a little bit above the ground and then stamp it down with your feet until it is even with the ground.
- 6). Decide what kinds of plants you want to include in the flower bed. Vary from evergreens and annual perennials that will last throughout the year, and contrast these with seasonal flowers, such as roses or daises. Also, look for plants that will add a color-contrast with the stone steps. Depending on the texture, size and shape of the steps, choose plants that will complement the stone structure.
- 7). When you have chosen the plants, plant them in the flower bed according to the width specified (about a foot and a half between each plant). Water and fertilize the plants, and add mulch to keep the weeds down and the moisture in the soil.
