How to Clean a Furnace and Humidifier
- 1). Turn off power to the furnace unit. Unplug all cords and move them away from the area.
- 2). Clean or replace the furnace filter. Remove the front panel that may be marked "filter." Take out the filter and either wash it with soap and warm water (if it is a permanent filter), or replace it with a new filter (if it is a replaceable filter).
- 3). Remove the panel that houses the blower and blower motor and clean both parts. Vacuum all loose dirt in and around the blower and motor. Use a slightly damp cloth to remove any remaining dust or dirt from the blower area.
- 4). Inspect the belts on the blower and motor. Make sure all belts are free of wear, tear, holes or fraying. Replace any belts that are not in proper order.
- 1). Analyze all lines and connections for cracks, leaks or water overflow.
- 2). Turn off the valve that supplies water to the humidifier.
- 3). Empty all water from the humidifier unit. If the unit has a drain (that is not clogged), pull up the drain plug and drain the water. Otherwise, manually pour the water out of the humidifier.
- 4). Clean each part of the humidifier, using a solution of one part vinegar to three parts warm water. Use a towel or rag to dry each part and reinstall parts back to the humidifier.
- 5). Reconnect and turn the power supply back on. Run the humidifier and check that the drum rotates and the valve that sets the humidity level opens.
