How to Help Your High Schooler Get Organized

    • 1). Purchase the tools he may need for better organization. Your child should have some type of assignment planner to keep track of his homework. This might be a notebook, a day planner or an electronic device. He may also need extra storage containers to keep his room tidy.

    • 2). Plan for an "organization day" at your home. Require all family members to be present. During this day, you should get rid of unnecessary items and designate a place for everything. This can be time-consuming the first time you do it, but doing weekly maintenance should take less than an hour.

    • 3). Hang a family calendar where everyone can see it. Make notes of all member's obligations to easily keep track of it. This can allow your teen to see what she has to do and when she will have time to do her assignments.

    • 4). Teach him how to break assignments down into smaller tasks. A large term paper can be overwhelming for your child. Things become much easier when you divide the large assignment into smaller chunks that he can easily do.

    • 5). Model good organizational behavior yourself. If you are constantly late, leave the mail all over the house and can never find what you're looking for, it's hard to expect your child to be any different. Organization should be a goal for yourself as well.
