Kate Hudson Talks About "Fool"s Gold
Kate Hudson reunites with her How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days co-star Matthew McConaughey for another romantic comedy, Fool’s Gold. Since finishing How to Lose a Guy five years ago, Hudson and McConaughey had been on the lookout for another movie to make together. But until Fool’s Gold came along, everything they were offered was either a repeat of How to Lose a Guy or just not that interesting.
“We had gotten quite a few opportunities to do it before,” said Hudson.
“This came, and it just felt like it was – the relationship felt right, because it was kind of an extension of what worked with How To Lose a Guy. But, at the same time, it was completely different, two totally different characters.”
As Fool’s Gold gets underway, Ben 'Finn' Finnegan (McConaughey) and Tess Finnegan (Hudson) have gone their separate ways. While Tess shared Ben's fascination with treasure hunting, Ben was consumed with the idea of finding undersea riches. His obsession played a major part in putting an end to their relationship. But just as Tess is beginning to move on with her life, Ben becomes convinced he’s found a vital clue to the whereabouts of the legendary Queen’s Dowry.
The fact the movie starts with the couple breaking up didn’t bother Hudson or McConaughey, who enjoy a different sort of friendship. McConaughey was even quoted as saying the two are a “perfect pain in each other’s asses” in real life. At the Los Angeles press junket for Fool’s Gold, Hudson laughed when asked her opinion of McConaughey’s colorful and descriptive quote.
“I think it’s just a personal thing, our relationship. We can drive each other crazy,” explained Hudson. “It’s also one of those things where it is like when you start knowing someone so well that you love them, like my brothers or even in relationships, the things that drive you crazy, you love even the things that drive you crazy about them.”
The stars of the film had to be proficient at scuba diving, which wasn’t a problem for McConaughey. However Hudson had to learn to dive just for the film. “We had to know our emergency procedures,” said Hudson about the experience. “Basically, the last month of shooting in the tank was all emergency procedures, you know? But they became so second nature through doing them so much, that it became easy. The only thing is, when you are underwater, you really have to be sharp. There is no laziness when you are working in water.”
Hudson had to do a lot of free diving for the film, and was able to hold her breath for a lot longer than she thought herself capable of prior to starring in Fool’s Gold. “I got 45 seconds, which was pretty good,” revealed Hudson. “But I had to do that whole blow hole sequence, and the thing is that they cut it and it looks like we weren’t doing it all in one. But we were doing all that stuff in one take where I had to wrap myself around the cannon and hold myself against the cannon and the air, the bubbles would come. They actually had this mechanism in the water that created the wave. That was actually the scariest moment, because I could not see. I couldn’t see anything and I was holding on, so I was a little nervous. You had to trust that the people that were there could see you [give your signal for help]. [It was] really fun though.”
Another frightening moment that stuck with Hudson occurred while she was getting certified. “I was getting certified and behind me was a manatee. And they're like the size of this table,” said Hudson. “And I saw it and I was like [squeals]. I run through my mask plug and take my mask off. I’m in the ocean and there is this like, I didn’t know really what it was… It was murky. It looked like a whale [laughing]. And then even when I told my diving instructor Michelle - I told Michelle, I turned and she was like, ‘Calm down, calm down.’ She turns around, she kind of went back and was like, ‘Whoa.’ And then we went up. I think the exact words out of my mouth were: ‘What the f--k was that?’ And then of course everybody was just so excited to see a manatee.”
Hudson became a mother in the five years since she and McConaughey last worked together. And now McConaughey is about to be a parent for the first time with girlfriend Camila Alves. Hudson thinks her co-star will be an incredible dad. “There is something that people don’t [know]. Because people see Matthew out always doing something, whether it be out dancing at a bar or beaching around or taking a hike with some crazy bandana on – that was a good one. I think that, like anything, people take their image and what they want someone else to be and people just run with it. And when you really know the person and really love the person, you recognize that that person is like nothing that people really want them [to be]. You know what I mean? It’s not real. It’s just not. And Matthew just happens to be one of the most loving and loyal people I know. His family is important to him. I think it’s one thing that we connect on. He’s great with kids, and I think he’ll be a very responsible and absolutely blast of a dad.”
