Teri Meri Kahaani Movie Review

102 1
It wont be an exaggeration to say that Bollywood thrives on romance. Time and again filmmakers have experimented with diverse genres in cinema but there first love still remains a tale of love then be it Heer-Ranjha, Laila-Majnu or Dil Toh Pagal Hai. And Kunal Kohlis Teri Meri Kahaani is yet another tribute to Bollywoods fav emotion Love.

But Teri Meri Kahaani is a different love story. It takes you on a journey of romance across three eras. But wasnt a hot Karishma Kapoor shouting that out from the posters of Dangerous Ishq? - Searching for her loveThrough many lives, was what she said. Then how is TMK different?

The opening line of TMK has the answer,Pehli bar hum kisise kab kaise kaha kis life mein milte hai ye hume bhi nahi pata..."

TMK presents a fairytale romance that propagates the fact that true love is beyond boundaries, beyond time frames and a diehard romantic would earnestly believe it. Its a known fact by now that TMK is not one but three love stories set in three different eras 1910, 1960 & 2012 (Get a glimpse of 1960 here). In 1910 (on the premise of Indias freedom struggle) a compulsive flirt, Javed, who has vowed to woo every girl with his cheeky shayari (reminding you of Aamir Khan of Fanaa) falls in love with Punjabi kudi Aradhana. In 1960, an aspiring music director falls hopelessly in love with an established actress, Rukhsaar. And finally, in 2012, a cool dude Krissh gets connected to hot chic Radha. But as they say, ye ishq nahin aasan, bus itna samajh lije, ek aag ka dariya hai aur doob ke jaana hai - Each story hits a dead end. Does that mean all three of them are connected? Will the three couples meet?

However, unlike other reincarnation sagas, in TMK only you know that the hero-heroine have met before, they are clueless, theres no melodrama, no dream sequence, no death, no birth to tell the tale of connection. Then how does the story move? We wont tell you that, watch the movie!

The beauty of TMK lies in creating the era. Muneesh Sappel and everybody else involved in recreating the bygone eras deserve a pat on the back. (Watch the making of Teri Meri Kahaani) Bombay of 1960 is depicted with all its charm, thanks to the attention given to minute details including the vintage cars and trams running on roads, hoardings of that time, extra artists dressed in the retro style to name a few. Similarily, the pre-Independence village in Lahore also comes alive under Kohlis direction and Sunil Patels camera work.

Besides visual transformation, Kunal has paid special attention to behavioral nuances of the characters, which are governed by the societal norms of that era. For example, the dialogue-less isharon-isharon mein kind of interaction between Rukhsar (the actress) and Govind (the struggler), the BBM-FB-IM junkies Krrish and Radha of 2012. Even the photo journalist digging out for scoops adds to the charm.

But, only nuances cant make for a good film. While the 1910 and 1960 love stories hold you (is that because of the curiosity element for the era?), the 2012 love story falls totally flat when it comes to entertainment. A few interesting twists could have turned this uncomplicated film into an engaging affair. Talking about love stories dealing with different time frames, London, Paris, New York was a better love story than this. Though, Amitabh Shuklas editing is worth appreciating as it is tough to keep a film like this taut. But, on some occasions the script looks hurried as events happen very fast, especially in the 1960 sequence.

Talking about performances, Priyanka Chopra is the queen of makeovers. After playing 12 characters in Whats Your Raashee and portraying so many looks in 7 Khoon Maaf, laying 3 characters looks like a cake walk for her. However, we liked her the most as the Punjabi kudi Aradhana.Shahid Kapoor is a surprise, especially as the Romeo Javed. His shayari remind you of Fanaas Aamir Khan and his acting sheds light on his versatility as an actor. While being Krissh would have come naturally to him, Govinds Rajesh Khanna type of style looked a little forced at times. Prachi Desai and Neha look pretty and have done justice to their roles.

Musically, the songs fit the situation and era. Mukhtasar and Uff are already kissing popularity, while Mujhse Pyar Karle Tuand Allah Jane promise to stay with you. However, this cannot be said as one of the best albums from Sajid Wajid. Prasoon Joshis lyrics are magical.

All in all, Teri Meri Kahaani is definitely not one of the greatest romantic films of Bollywood but its an honest attempt at reviving the romantic era sans any melodrama. So, you dont like the Rowdy-Dabanngs and watching a light-hearted film is on your mind, grab your tub of pop-corn as Teri Meri Kahaani is your date movie!
