The major worries of most folks thinking about coming to Nigeria is the level of security and their safety when they arrive at the airport and especially the place where they are to reside.

• The worries are genuine.
  I do not know what you have heard about what is happening in Nigeria, but it is not all gloom and doom.
  It is human nature to feel touchy and edgy when you find yourself in a new place, now you can imagine how that feeling will be when information about that place is negative.
  
• However, the following tips have been collated to ensure that your valuables remain with you when you arrive and also when you decide to leave.
  No matter what you have heard, Nigeria is still an amazing country, rich in lovely and enterprising people.

Passing through the airport

• At least before you get to see the country you must pass through the airport, unfortunately, the most likely place of you been robbed or swindled is at the airport.
  To ensure that valuables like jewelleries, cash, communication gadgets etc are safe, place them in pouches or backpacks.
  Passing valuables through checked- in baggage increases the chances of the bags either been misrouted or pilfered.
  
• Ensure you pass all your inquiries through an airline official who is properly "badged".
  I presume that you are still in a restricted area, thus all persons working there are monitored.
  
• Do not use bags that announce to the world about how rich you are.
  Airport environment is for everybody and most of it areas are termed as public places.
  Designer bags show you are a gold fish.
  ( I mean no offence)
• Do your bookings for hotels and taxis at the arrival hall lobby.
  You can get assistance from the airlines staff stationed at the arrival hall immediately you have finished your customs and immigration checks.
  Mind you, this request for assistance must be made immediately.
  Always ensure that those that offer their services to you are easily recognizable and identifiable.
  Better still, you can do your bookings for hotels online.
  Some provide transport from the airport to wherever you wish to go.
  
• Anybody who approaches you to provide a service which you did not request for should be avoided.
  If they persist report them to the nearest security officer.
  Most importantly, do not transact any business outside the immediate vicinity of the arrival hall.
  
• Travel Light.
  Most of the stuff we travel with is usually not needed.
  Carrying too much causes unnecessary attraction and distraction.
  
• If it is possible, let your close relations or colleague pick you up at the airport.
  They know the terrain very well; however, their trust is paramount.
  

As I stated earlier, losing your stuff while travelling can happen anywhere, but with a little planning from your side, the probability of getting robbed or losing your stuff can be minimized.
