The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a government agency that has the goal of making the workplace a safe place for all employees. OSHA sets guidelines for general safety, but also provides specific regulations for different types of jobs and careers. Its landscaping regulations include those that deal with mowing and soil preparation.

    Soil Preparation

    • Landscape workers must prepare soil in a way that avoids slips and trips. They must mow lawns wearing work boots with soles that provide ample traction. Mowing hazards can occur from equipment accidents, uneven grass and hearing loss from the sounds of the mower. OSHA specifies that employees must minimize these hazards before mowing. Employers must train any employees that will be performing these work duties.

    Irrigation

    • OSHA states that employees must not touch irrigation lines, as there is a chance of amputation, electrocution and burns. OSHA requires that employees must wear gloves when working with a mower, and must be aware of the mowing blades at all times. Landscape workers must also know where all irrigation and utility lines are in their work area.

    Plantings and Tree Care

    • When mowing, employees must take proper care when working around plantings. They must keep their hands away from the mower blade and grass or brush-cutting blades. Landscape workers must also wear personal protective equipment, such as goggles, when operating blowers or machinery that causes debris to fly up, as it can ricochet off plants and trees. Ear protection is helpful, but not necessary, to protect workers from hearing loss due to loud machinery. If lawn care includes pruning or trimming trees, employees must wear proper head protection to protect from falling or flying objects.
