Magnolia Tree Advice

    Where and When to Plant

    • Plant a magnolia tree in early spring for the best results. Plant in an area that has well-drained soil that is high in acid. Plenty of space should be allowed for growth because the tree can grow to a height of 60 to 80 feet with a spread of 30 to 50 feet. The magnolia tree will grow in either full sun or partial shade. Too much shade can prevent blooming in a full-grown tree.

    General Care

    • Young magnolia trees require constantly moist soil to promote good root health. Roots that are allowed to dry out may die, which will lead to tree death. Established trees only need watering when conditions are very dry or the soil does not retain water well.

Mulch is beneficial to a magnolia tree because it will protect roots that are above ground from damage and prevent weed growth. Mulch will also help retain soil moisture and aid in the growth of beneficial organisms. Mulch should be added in a layer 2 to 4 inches deep and a minimum of 2 feet wide.

Prune a magnolia tree after flowering is over. Cut off any damaged branches or any branches that are crossing or leaning on other branches. Remove any suckers that are growing on branches. Pruning for size and shape can also be done at this time.

Fertilization is best done in the fall. Use a slow-release, all-purpose formula. Keep fertilizer away from the trunk of the tree and spread out to 1 1/2 feet in all directions. Use a powdered fertilizer and allow rain or a sprinkler to dissolve it into the ground.

    Propagation

    • Propagation is best done with a cutting from a young magnolia tree. Take a stem cutting from a healthy branch. The cutting should be 4 to 6 inches in length. Remove any lower leaves from the stem and leave two to four leaves at the top. Wound the cutting by making small nicks at the bottom with a sharp knife or razor blade. Dip the cut end in to a rooting hormone and place in coarse sand or peat moss. The rooting medium should be damp and well-drained. Place the potted cutting in a location where it will receive good lighting but not direct sunlight. Roots will appear in six to eight weeks. Once roots are well-established, the plant can be moved to a larger container.
