Summer math jobs are available for people of all skill levels in all parts of the country. The jobs might involve teaching mathematics or using skills in mathematics to address a company's needs. Generally, the earlier you apply for a summer job, the better your chances of getting it. Early spring is a good time to begin searching for a summer job, although some positions still might be open in the summer. - Many students are out of school during the summer and often use the opportunity to improve on their academic performance. The demand for private tutors therefore is higher in summer than at other times of the year. A private math tutor can work with students from elementary school to college and even beyond. Because there are no requirements for working as a private math tutor other than a love of mathematics and a desire to help students improve, it is a good option to consider.
- A few summer research programs are available for math majors at various academic and government institutions. The application deadline for these positions usually is early in the year, and they also might require advanced preparation such as recommendation letters, copies of transcripts and a personal statement, so students are advised to begin their search early. Many of these positions offer a stipend, though sometimes, finding and paying for accommodation is left to the student. The best place to begin looking for available opportunities is at your school's job or career center and on the Internet.
- Many colleges run enrichment programs for incoming freshmen or high school students during the summer. These programs need highly motivated people to fill their mathematics teaching assistant positions. Some of the positions offer room and board for their instructors, as well as a stipend. The job openings usually are advertised early in the year, although some openings are available toward the start of the summer as well. Contact your school's job or career services center for more information.
- Although some summer internships are unpaid, they are good opportunities for students to gain valuable real-world experience. You can find internships by calling local companies and asking for openings or opportunities they might have available. You also can try searching websites for openings or visiting your school's job or career center.
