How to Create a Donna Reed Costume
- 1). Watch old reruns of "The Donna Reed Show" on the Internet, DVD or on video. The show was aired in syndication for decades, and you are sure to come across many with copies of their own that they are willing to share. Donna Reed's work has inspired many, and watching the television show will help you to see exactly why that is.
- 2). Read novels and social books from the 1950s. It is important that, aside from watching the show, you also get a careful account of how a lady spoke in the fities. Donna Stone was a true lady and so was Donna Reed. You want to capture that perfectly.
- 3). Go to a true vintage shop to get a dress that is suitable for the time period and age of the star. It should be fitted at the waist, and the skirt should be flowing. Be sure to wear a slip underneath--or even short hoop skirt--that accents and flatters the dress. Don't be afraid to try on several dresses, and be sure not to grab the first vintage dress you find from the time period. Donna was individualistic and stylish.
- 4). Wear classic stockings. They should be flesh colored and old-fashioned. You want your legs to be flattered by your new '50s style. Take command of the costume by this subtle touch.
- 5). Wear high heels. Even when she clicked her heels in that one episode when she was a bit miffed at Jeff, Donna Reed had on high heels that complimented her dress. She was always in full gear to greet Alec at the door in all her beauty. Celebrate that amusing yet classic '50s tradition.
- 6). Place pearls around your neck. You want to be sure that you are as glamorous as Donna was in every way possible and that includes her simple, sweet and gorgeous jewelry that was surely given to her by her pediatrician husband, Alec. You certainly don't want to overwhelm your costume with jewels, but some significant pieces that are suitable for the character are perfect.
- 7). Curl your hair as the last step. Donna's hair always looked as though she came fresh from the beauty parlor. Take the photograph included in this article to your favorite beautician, or have a go at it yourself. Simply let the curling iron reach its hottest temperature, and have a go at your hair. Make sure you are curling your hair downwards. Classic '50s style should be observed.
