How to Stand When the Judge Enters

    • 1). Be seated and ready for the hearing to begin before the judge enters the room. Once she enters it will be time to begin, so you do not want to look late or unprepared.

    • 2). Stand as you see the judge enter. In many courtrooms the bailiff will call for everyone to stand, however even if he does not it is expected you will do so.

    • 3). Remain standing as the judge makes her way to the bench. Posture and body language are important in making a good first impression. Stand tall with your hands held together or at your side. Having your arms crossed may make you look angry and leaning or slouching will make you appear lazy or disrespectful.

    • 4). Allow the bailiff or the judge to address the court and tell you to be seated. If no such announcement is made, you are allowed to be seated after the judge takes her own seat.
