The Highway Traffic Act: Section 128
- The Highway Traffic Act is Ontario's list of traffic laws. An extensive statute, the act was last updated in 1990. It covers everything from the operation of toll ways and off-road vehicles to the use of photo-radar and red-light cameras to detect speeding drivers.
- Section 128 refers to the portion of the statute that sets the speed limits. Cars, for instance, cannot travel more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour on the highway or 50 kilometers (31 miles) per hour within a municipality. The section also outlines the penalties that drivers can expect if they break the law.
- In Ontario, demerit points are assigned to a citizen who commits a driving offense. Points are established by the severity of the crime. If a driver accumulates nine demerit points, he loses his license. Speeding violations can cost a driver from three to six points, depending on how fast he was traveling.
