Producing a good research paper that will receive a high grade can be a little daunting and it may be difficult to know where to begin. Often, a well crafted research paper will determine a final grade in a particular class. This can put a student in a very stressful situation, especially if he or she isnt used to writing lengthy pieces. Following some basic guidelines can make the process easier.

If you havent been given a very specific topic, choose something that you find highly interesting, something that you are eager to learn more about and are willing to spend a great deal of time researching and learning about. Make sure there is plenty of information out there about your topic. If its hard to find reliable sources, you may need to broaden your subject of focus. And the opposite is true if there is too much information and its difficult to sort through it all, narrow the focus.

A well written paper will offer information from many reliable sources. Start doing some research on the subject and gather important sources. Weed out the less useful or repetitive sites and sources. Strong papers provide the reader with places to learn more about the subject, not the top results of an Internet search.

After reviewing some of the data on your topic, identify your thesis and write your thesis statement. A thesis statement declares your opinion of what your paper will be about, and the bulk of the paper you will be defending and supporting this opinion. Just like the rest of the paper, the thesis statement should be very focused and specific.

One way to make sure the assignment stays on track is the use of an outline. An outline should begin with an introduction and flow into the main body of the work. This is where the writer makes his arguments and explains to his audience why he feels this way. Outlining the body of the paper helps keep the paper focused and is a good place to determine how long the final product will be. Topics of discussion can be added and taken away accordingly. The outline should end with a strong conclusion. This is where the writer will summarize the information presented, remind the audience of the thesis, and prove his point.

Once you have a good, well focused outline, you can begin writing your paper. A well written report will offer strong arguments to support the beliefs presented in the thesis statement. The writing should lead the reader from point to point, without straying into information that doesnt support the arguments. It will be grammatically correct, highly edited, and revised as needed.

A final word of advice: A well thought out research paper is always required to determine its class. Start working on your paper early so you have time to let it sit for a day or two after you complete the writing. This will help you step back from the project and look at it objectively. It is also easier to spot mistakes when proofreading if your mind has cleared of it for a short period. If possible, have a friend or fellow student; give it a final proofread to catch mistakes.
