How to Water a Bamboo Tree
- 1). Plant bamboo in well-drained soil that's rich in organic matter. Avoid locations with heavy clay or wet soils as well as locations where water puddles after rainfall, irrigation or snow melt.
- 2). Water newly planted bamboo twice weekly during the first summer after planting. Irrigate until the top 6 inches of soil feels moist, supplying about an inch of water. The bamboo may not require supplemental irrigation during periods of high rainfall.
- 3). Irrigate established bamboo plants once every seven to 10 days during the spring, summer and fall months when there is less than an inch of rainfall in the week prior. Established bamboo tolerates brief drought periods.
- 4). Check the soil moisture every two weeks in winter when the ground isn't frozen. Water if the top 2 inches feels dry. Don't allow the soil to dry out completely during the winter.
- 5). Inspect the leaves of the bamboo before watering. Water the plants only if the leaves are beginning to curl slightly inward.
