Is it Really Possible to Eat Healthy on the Go?

103 34
Eating healthy on the go is absolutely possible but in order for it to happen you must put forth some effort, at least in the beginning.
We all have the ability to make smart choices.
It is all about planning! It doesn't have to take a lot of time and adding it into your daily routine should be really easy to do.
Here are 3 tips to help you get organized so you are eating on the go like a pro.
1.
Stock Your Pantry and Freezer ASAP
Create a stock list of items you should always have in your freezer and pantry.
This will allow you to have the right ingredients to make a quick healthy meal when you are pressed for time.
Keep this list handy.
When you run out of something on this list, transfer it to your weekly grocery list and replace it right away.
The key to healthy eating is always being prepared.
Here are some common foods that should always be in your pantry or freezer.
Pantry:
  • Canned beans
  • Canned fish (tuna, salmon)
  • Whole grain crackers (Mary Gone Krackers, Kashi)
  • Whole grain cereals
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Canned soups (Health Valley, Amy's, Wolfgang Puck)
  • Chicken/Veggie/Beef stock
  • Unprocessed whole grains (quinoa, millet, brown rice, kamut)
  • Whole rolled oats
  • Corn grits
  • Nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews)
  • Natural sweeteners (agave, honey, brown rice syrup)
  • Variety of teas
  • Oil based salad dressings
  • Dried fruit (apricots, raisins)
  • Nut butters
  • Sauces (teriyaki, soy, mustard, ketchup)
  • Oils and vinegars (olive oil, white wine vinegar, etc)
  • Protein powder
  • Soy or almond milk
Freezer:
  • Family packs of meats (chicken, beef)
  • Frozen fish (salmon, tilapia)
  • Frozen fruit
  • Whole grain frozen waffles
  • Frozen vegetables
  • Edamame
  • Sprouted grain bread
2.
Always Have Snacks on Hand It is a very good idea to always have healthy snacks stashed in your purse, bag, briefcase, or desk drawer.
This will give you some options when you want to go to the vending machine for junk.
Here are some ideas of snacks you could have on hand.
  • Cut up fruit and veggies
  • Ziplock bags of nuts
  • Crackers and hummus
  • Yogurt and fruit
  • Nutrition bars (such as Larabar, or Organic Food Bar)
  • Trail mix
  • Edamame
  • Cheese stick
  • Cans of fish
  • Cans of soup
3.
Have An Easy Go To Default Grocery List
It is not always easy to page through cookbooks and magazines when you are looking to cook a quick meal.
My suggestion is to pick your top 3 meals that are quick, easy to make and healthy and have a list ready of all the ingredients for any given shopping trip.
That way there is no question what you need at the store.
Since these are your favorite dishes, there also will be no questions on how to prepare the dishes and you won't have to cross your fingers and hope for the best.
Following these 3 tips may not be easy in the beginning but with any healthy habit, it takes some time to master them.
Once you do, you will rarely find yourself caught in a position where you are stuck choosing from poor unhealthy foods.
