For the better part of two decades I have spent a majority of my fishing time dedicated to the pursuit of trout, mostly while wading is small rivers.

My love for trout fishing in small rivers began at the start of my fishing "career" when my fishing mentor introduced me to many of the nuances involved in wading in rivers for trout.

There is something about wading for trout in a small river that has always felt right to me, which is interesting because I am not a fly fisherman.
That's right I am not a fly fisherman, yet I love with wading small rivers in search of trout.
The tips and tricks that will be outlined in this article are for the spin fisherman who enjoys wading in rivers in search of trout, rather than fly fishermen.

1. Tread Lightly - If you are interested in catching trout while wading in small rivers one of the biggest tips is to "tread lightly" while wading.
   Trout can spook very easily in small rivers so you want to be very careful when walking in the water.
   Be mindful of your steps and don't cause too much of "a ruckus" while wading.
   When wading for trout the bottom line is to tread as lightly as possible at all times.
   
2. Go Ultralight - When fishing for trout (or any other species of fish) in small rivers you always want to use ultralight gear.
   By "ultralight gear" I'm referring specifically to the size of the rod, reel, and fishing line that's employed while fishing.
   This is very important when wading in small rivers.
   You always want the focus of your offering to be the offering and not your line, and the most effective way to use light line is by using ultralight rods & reels.
   The ideal sized line for fishing in small rivers is four pound test.
   Six pound test is passable, but four pound is ideal.
   
3. Use Live Worms - One of the best trout baits to use when fishing in small rivers while wading are live worms, and when wading for trout the easiest way to carry live worms is a bait bag.
   A bait bag is simply a small pouch that hangs from your fishing vest and holds your live worms while fishing.
   This way baiting up and re-baiting takes seconds rather than minutes.
   The most effective way to rig live worms for fishing in small rivers is a set of gang hooks.
   A live worm rigged on a set of gang hooks and allowed to flow naturally with the current is a deadly trout fishing tactic.
   The bottom line is that wading for trout should include the use of live worms.
   
4. Fish During A New Moon - The phase of the moon has a dramatic impact on the feeding behavior of trout and a New Moon normally provides the most productive fishing.
   Something as simple as fishing when there is a new moon can have an amazing impact on your catch rates.
