- 1). Hit the water. Houghton lies on the Portage Canal, a waterway that splits the peninsula, creating a shipping route. Enjoy waterskiing, kayaking, swimming, or boating on the canal. The Keweenaw Star and Ranger III offer sunset cruises, and the miles of lake shore are idea for relaxing walks.
