Travelling in El Paso While Working As An Au pair
This is a continuation of a series of articles on travelling around the world while working as an au pair. It's semi-autobiographical in part and narrates the author's experience of working as an au pair while travelling around the world.
You might have heard about El Paso, especially in relation to the American military, because you can find there some of the largest military complexes, such as Force Bliss, the White Sand Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base which is very near El Paso. Sun City, like its residents call El Paso, is actually the 19th largest city in all of the United States of America, so just imagine all the opportunities this city has and waiting for you to go and get them!
Hot Spots in El Paso
When I first travelled to El Paso, I thought of it as being more of a military city than anything else. But I was amazed to find out how many points of interest it had and I am talking about really nice places to visit! For example, be sure not to miss the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, the Magoffin Homestead, the National Border Patrol Museum and El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center. They are all about historical sites, exhibits and stuff like that. Trust me, they are very interesting.
If you are interested in something different, then I will recommend something else. The Plaza Theater is a well - known landmark, for example. Moreover, we have McKellingon Canyon which is open not only to hikers, but to picnickers too. Do you want to relax? Then grab a friend or a book and go to Big Bend National Park or Guadalupe National Park. Want to do something fun in the sun? Check out Wet and Wild Water World. Want to see something special and natural? Go and see the maar volcanic craters, such as Kilbourne Hole and Hunt's Hole, which will make your jaw drop!
Why Not also Study in El Paso?
Among all of these amazing places and spots to visit, El Paso offers great educational institutions. Check out the University of Texas, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, University Medical Center, Western Technical College, El Paso Community College and many others. The training the teachers here have is of high quality and be sure you will be proud of them as being your teachers. You will specialize in the field that you like and your diploma will be worldwide recognized.
If you do not want to start courses at a new faculty and/ or want to improve your level of English first, then you should check La Paz Language Academy, where they have all sorts of courses that will get your attention!
Accommodation in El Paso
Although such a big city, El Paso doesn't have over the roof prices for accommodation. But when I say accommodation I am referring to a studio, which will be enough for you to start with. After you get a nice job and start earning some money, you will afford a bigger apartment. Ok, so the price for renting a studio is somewhere about 450 $, but you can find one slightly cheaper or more expensive, of course, depending on what it provides. If you want more information and pictures, you can go here and see what this website has to offer. You will find there all sorts of studios but not only. You just need to pick the one you think will suit you and contact the owner!
Nightlife in El Paso
Because we are young, we need to have fun. And because we need to have fun, we need places that suit our tastes. What do you want to do at night in El Paso? Do you want to go and have a nice, traditional dinner in a posh restaurant, have a beer in a pub and listen to live music or do you want to hit the floor in a fancy club? You can do all that in El Paso, you just check what mood you are in and then you need to choose the place you want to go tonight.
Names such as Club 101, Old Plantation, Republic Night Club, La Pachanga, MBar, Plum, Coconuts Bar & Grill, Peoria, Oasis Bistro & Lounge, the Motel Bar are just a few that you should look up and make reservations. Whether you grab a friend or go alone and meet new people, you will have a lot of fun and awesome moments!
Jobs in El Paso
You can do anything you want in El Paso, but sooner or later you will run out of money and you will be forced to look for a job. That is why I guess it is better to scout the market now to see what kind of jobs El Paso promotes. After you check this, this, this and this, you can apply for the job you want, the more, the better, because you do not know which employer will accept you. And who knows, maybe you will get a nice job that pays a nice salary and that will satisfy you too! This might sound too good to be true, but you never know!
