How to Avoid Chainsaw Kickback
- 1). Put on safety glasses and gloves for protection before handling a chainsaw and cutting wood. Wear a helmet when working in the woods while cutting trees for head protection.
- 2). Grip the rear handle and trigger throttle with your dominant hand. Grip the handle on the front of the chainsaw with the opposite hand.
- 3). Stand to the side of the limb where the cut will be made with the chainsaw. Do not stand directly behind the chainsaw while cutting to reduce potential injury from a kickback.
- 4). Position the limb back as far as possible on the bar of the chainsaw. Avoid cutting with the tip of the chainsaw bar as this will potentially lead to kickback.
- 5). Stand with your feet shoulder width apart for proper control and balance. Apply stead downward pressure on the saw while cutting and stay in control of the saw during operation at all times.
