How to Change Conduits

104 6
    • 1). Turn off the main circuit breaker inside the electrical panel. Trace the junction box, or outlet box, that holds both ends of the pipe. Conduit pipes generally terminate with an outlet box, or with a junction box.

    • 2). Unscrew the cover of the junction box and view the wires inside the box. Wrap a band of masking tape on each spliced wire, and designate each set of spliced wire with letters to know how the wires are reconnected later. Note carefully how the wires are configured because each wire must be reconnected in exactly the same configuration. Carefully unscrew the wire nuts and disconnect the spliced wires inside the junction box.

    • 3). Unscrew the faceplate of a wall electrical outlet or switch if the conduit pipe terminates into a wall outlet box. Unscrew the outlet, or switch from the outlet box, and pull the outlet or switch out of the wall. Note carefully how the wires are connected to the terminal screws on the outlet, or switch. Loosen the terminal screws and remove the outlet.

    • 4). Unscrew the light fixture from the outlet box if the pipe runs into a light outlet box. View the wires inside the box and note carefully how the wires are connected to the fixture. Unscrew the wire nuts and disconnect the wires.

    • 5). Carefully pull out the disconnected wires from one end of the pipe. Note how the conduit pipe attaches to another conduit pipe or box. Loosen the fittings that attach the pipe to an electrical box with a wrench or screwdriver, then remove the conduit pipe.

    • 6). Unscrew the clamps holding the conduit pipe in place, and carefully remove the broken or damaged conduit pipe. Change the conduit pipe with an identical one. Install the new pipe in the same manner, and position as those of the previous pipe. Insert each end of the pipe into its corresponding box or fitting.

    • 7). Replace the clamps that hold the pipe in place. Tighten the screws on any pipe connector, along the length of the pipe. Tighten the screws on the fittings that hold each end of the pipe onto the electrical box.

    • 8). Run each wire you removed, back into the conduit pipe, by fishing the wire using a fish tape. Connect the end of each wire to its corresponding terminal screw or wire following the wiring configurations you noted in Steps 2 to 4.

    • 9). Check each connection carefully for loose connections by pulling on each wire to see if it is loose. Replace all electrical fixtures you removed in Steps 2 to 4, and replace any faceplate or junction box cover, using a screwdriver. Turn on the circuit breaker inside the electrical panel.
