    What are Bits?

    • The term "bit" is a used as an abbreviation for the term binary digit. Binary digits are indicated as 0s and 1s in computer code. Generally a bit represents the amount of information stored digitally in one of two forms. When discussing colors the number of bits represents the bit depth or color depth available that determines the color quality and size that can be viewed without losing quality.

    32-Bit Color: Color Depth

    • Color schemes that are 32-bit can produce a range of 256 color possibilities. Colors beyond this range are generally substituted for neutral variations. Color at the 32-bit level is considered to be a deep color range because of the variations in color that are available and the sharpness of an image produced in relation to lower bit numbers.

    64-Bit Color

    • Color schemes at the 64-bit level produce a significantly wider spectrum of color options. In a 64-bit color scheme, there are 65,536 possible color variations. Using a 64-bit scheme image quality is greatly enhanced and much sharper than lower bit quality productions, which makes fine details more easily visible. The higher bit level allows for larger storage of image information, which means larger images can be created without losing quality due to stretching or color spectrum not being deep enough.
