Is Mineral Water Healthy For You?

103 27
We know what makes mineral water healthy; it's those traces of elements such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
But, what makes bottled natural mineral water H20 good for your health is questionable.
Throughout the years, people have considered mineral water healthy for bathing and on occasion for drinking.
But, these new bottled brands suggest that you should drink it in large quantities every day.
According to the company website, many different and unrelated health conditions can benefit from a bottle or two of natural mineral water H20.
They sell it in two liter bottles and even in jugs designed for coolers.
They are suggesting it as your primary form of fluid intake.
What they are selling could be hazardous to your health.
Natural mineral water H20 contains an element known as manganese, which is used by the body to repair broken bones and replace cartilage.
It is stored in the liver and kidneys.
It is only needed in very small daily quantities and it is found in many foods such as leafy greens, legumes and other plant foods.
The United States Department of Agriculture says that in drinking water, it is more bio-available than it is from foods.
The natural mineral water H20 Company advertises that as a good thing, but the USDA says otherwise.
What makes naturally occurring mineral water healthy is that the elements are present in very low quantities.
For example, an eight ounce glass of many bottled brands might contain approximately what the body needs on a daily basis.
Natural mineral water H20 has been modified through ionization to contain much higher contents of manganese than would naturally occur.
The USDA sets maximum upper limits for consumption of even daily vitamins.
Going above those limits causes numerous health problems.
When something is more "bio-available", the body absorbs it more quickly.
Little is excreted as waste.
The USDA says that exceeding the maximum upper limit set for manganese can cause liver and kidney damage.
It is especially important that anyone with existing health problems of that nature avoid drinking natural mineral water H20.
So, we know what makes mineral water healthy has nothing to do with manganese and we wonder about other bottled brands.
Let's just look at Perrier, which is a good source of calcium.
Not too long ago, a treatment facility employee, who was sure he would find his Perrier mineral water healthy, tested a bottle.
He found levels of benzene (an industrial pollutant that causes cancer) 15 times higher than what his facility was allowed to send to customers.
Eventually, after numerous lots were tested, the entire US supply was recalled.
Brands that are bottled in plastic contaminate the water within, because of chemicals used to create the plastic.
There is much controversy surrounding the use of polycarbonate and other polymers for beverages.
The safest choice is glass.
The safest, most environmentally friendly and cost effective choice for most of us is to buy a water purifier that balances minerals and removes contaminants.
Then buy some glass containers and store it in the fridge, maybe with a slice of lime or lemon.
In that way, you will find your natural mineral water healthy, without question.
