I Survived A Long-distance Relationship
I remembered in college while attending to my little cousins voice recording for their dad who is working overseas as a seafarer, I promised myself not to marry a man of such occupation to escape from the feeling of emptiness. I was holding back my tears as I facilitated the recording, mobile phones were not commonly used back then and families tried all the means to keep the communication incessant.
As for me, I married the same an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker). It is a journey of Acceptance, Understanding and Hard Work. Sharing to you some tips on how to make it Work.
Internet
This is the most important ingredient. You can't go wrong when you have one at home. Monthly subscription costs is only P999 ( USD25)a month. Of course, this should be coupled with a viable webcam. The web offers a lot of means to communicate- frequently used are Yahoo Messenger, Windows Instant Messaging but I am more at home with Skpe and works for me well. My daughter appreciates seeing her dad in front of the monitor it feels like he is just around the corner playing with her and not miles away. She even gives her dad a kiss by kissing the monitor.
Call
My husband and I agree on the frequency of our calls at a minimum. And these calls should be of two different purposes. One is an intimate exchange with me as her wife (couples need quality time even in the phone) and second is a one-on-one talk with his child. My husband had a hard time understanding this point for he thought it is one and the same but I stressed the significance of his 2 roles, that of a husband and a father. He ought to maintain two relationships long distance. Tough, huh!
Email
You can never get enough of each other and atleast once daily; do send a note of cheerful words to your partner. A short message could brighten his /her day. My husband is fond of sending out a Hi to me on a daily basis and indeed seeing his name appearing in my Inbox creates a positive impression on me.
Presents
Keeping the music playing is such a demanding endeavor from a distance but with online shopping at my fingertips, it is not too hard to shop online for a man's delight. I surprised him of X-men original DVDs delivered to his office a few days after his birthday. See more gift items on this site http://shop.her-desk.com/ at very reasonable prices. Give atleast 2 weeks for the shipping especially if you have it delivered outside of the US. Am looking forward to special occasions in the coming days perfect days to surprise him.
See each other
Schedule vacation time and see to it that it is spent in quality. Take advantage of cheap airline fares so you can go home as frequently as you can. Airline companies sell tickets at very low price on off peak season, so keep a credit card to gear you with online purchase and subscribe to their newsletters to keep you informed.
Final Analysis
The list works well coupled with a huge amount of TRUST to your partner. In the final analysis, it is the amount of SACRIFICE you are willing to give that matters. But with the assurance of LOVE I bet that you would be willing to give everything!
