About Quail Hunting Supplies

    Weapons

    • The most common quail-hunting weapon is a shotgun--12 or 20 gauge. Remember to carry your removable choke system with you if your shotgun is equipped with one. Different hunting conditions or coveys can benefit from different choke sizes. Bring two different shot sizes with you, but don't carry them on your body. Consider the weight savings of packing a 20-gauge shotgun versus a 12-gauge shotgun.

    Warmth and Comfort

    • Quail season is typically fall through winter. Count on having at least a few cold days in the field. Dress in layers to keep warm early in the day and shed layers as you hike. Wear comfortable waterproof hiking boots, which you can purchase at stores like Orvis and Cabela's.

    Protection

    • Wear extra layers on the front of your legs to keep the prickly parts of shrubs and plants from penetrating your pants as you hike. You also can wear chaps, specifically made for bird hunting, that offer the same kind of protection as pants.

    Vest

    • Your bird vest is a valuable item in the field. Bird vests typically have rubber-lined pockets in the back for carrying birds. Vests also usually have several individual shot-shell holders and at least two larger pockets. A good vest will hold your ammunition, water, snacks, whistle and dog collar--if you hunt with a dog. Bird hunting vests come in zip-up varieties, suspender packs and even full-length coats for the coldest weather.

    Accessories

    • Wear a hat to deflect the wind and protect you from sunburn. Light gloves are recommended for protection and flexibility when you're loading your shotgun or working your remote dog collar. Always carry at least one bright orange article of clothing or accessory. The bright color helps other hunters see you in the rapidly changing moments of busting a covey. Your dog also should always have a bright orange collar--at a minimum.
