How to Set Plum Blooms

104 7
    • 1). Fertilize your flowering plum tree every other year using a basic tree fertilizer. Ensuring that your tree has enough nutrients will help to encourage abundant blossoms.

    • 2). Mulch around the base of your tree. The mulch should extend 4 feet in all directions from the trunk. Mulch helps to keep moisture in the soil, assisting your tree in obtaining the water it needs to properly flower.

    • 3). Water your plum tree with a garden hose twice per week from spring through fall. In climates where it does not regularly snow, water the plum tree once per week in the winter.

    • 4). Prune your plum tree in the early spring once the danger of frost has past. The branches should have small leaf buds on them that have not yet produced leaves. Use your ladder to help you reach higher branches and wear gloves to protect your hands. Clear away dead branches and then prune any inside growth that may limit the amount of sun the main tree branches receive. The more sun they are able to get, the more blooms they will set.
