Casual Hangout in Vila Madalena, São Paulo
Updated on Feb.26, 2013
Companhia Tradicional de Comércio does a good job of underlining the bohemian ties between São Paulo and Rio. Astor is one of the group's places with a foot in each town: the newer branch in Ipanema and this spot with a touch of 1950s in the décor, a counter brought over from Philadelphia and good casual food, draft beer and cocktails.
Specially appealing to the 30+ crowd, Astor has a speakeasy-inspired underground, Sub Astor; the upper floor is more open to the street and a great stop for lunch from Friday to Sunday.
Some of the dishes served are available both in Rio and SP. Try classics such as Filé à Oswaldo Aranha, the bouillabaisse and the Cocotte Chic.
The menu and the drink list change periodically. In early 2012, the bar pumped up its cocktail options with a new gin tonica selection: the recipes were created in tandem by Edgard Bueno da Costa, one of the partners, and Pereira, a skilled barman transferred from Sub Astor.
Costa had returned from a trip to Europe in late 2011 with his mind on gin tonica drinks he tried there and after a few days of experimentation with different bitters the Astor was serving the Saffron (R$ 33), rich in spices and with a twist of Bahia orange; the Orange Spicy (R$ 33), Bulldog gin with grapefruit bitter, anise, orange and cinnamon; and four other new mixes.
Mon-Wed 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thur 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., Fri and Sat, noon to 3 a.m., Sun noon to midnight.
