How to Use a Heat Lamp to Keep Plants

104 11
    • 1). Choose a heat lamp designed for interior gardening. These types of grow lights will provide light in the right spectrum for growing plants, as well as adding heat to the environment.

    • 2). Place the heat lamp at least 1 foot away from the plants. Too much direct heat can cause some plants to become scorched or dried out. Adjust the distance of the lamp based on the needs of the specific plant.

    • 3). Use a heat lamp with a timer, or turn the lamp off at night, to mimic the cycle of natural light a plant would receive growing outdoors. Set the timer so that the lamp will be on for roughly 12 hours at a time.

    • 4). Use the lamp more frequently in winter, to supplement natural light lost during the shorter days. Use a heat lamp year round for plants grown in rooms without windows; plants grown with access to natural light need less of the heat and light from a lamp.
