How to Plunge a Clogged Toilet With Closet Auger
- 1). Look into the toilet bowl to see where it drains, front or back, depending on the model. Pull the auger cable through the handle until the rounded tip is at the end of the guide. Place the end of the auger into the bowl so that its tip is pointing upward.
- 2). Turn the crank and push the handle down to work the cable into the toilet trap, which is the part where the drain curves into the main drain. Keep cranking until you have no cable left, and it gives some resistance. This is usually about 3 feet, which is as far as the auger tip can reach.
- 3). Turn the crank handle quickly a few times in one direction, then reverse direction and turn it quickly the other way. Keep cranking and pulling up on the tube, but do not use excessive force so as not to crack the toilet bowl.
- 4). Watch the water level in the tank while you are using the auger. Pull the guide tube back out until you feel the auger resisting. Pull up gently on the auger tube while cranking a few times in each direction, and stop if the water disappears down the drain, as this indicates that you've broken up the clog.
- 5). Flush the toilet, and if it still drains slowly, repeat the steps using the auger until it flushes normally. Clean the toilet with cleanser and flush it again.
