How to Add Used Motor Oil to Diesel Fuel
- 1). Collect used motor oil in 2-liter soda bottles until you have 3-5 gallons. Use a funnel when pouring the oil into the soda bottles to avoid a mess.
- 2). Set up the filtration apparatus while collecting the used motor oil. Place one 5-gallon bucket on top of a shelf and the other on the bottom of the shelf. Measure out enough rope to reach from the bottom of the bucket on the top of the shelf to the bottom of the bucket on the bottom of the shelf. Cut the rope at this length.
- 3). Pour the used motor oil into the bucket on top of the shelf once a significant amount has been collected. Insert one end of the rope into the top bucket containing the used motor oil, making sure it touches the bottom of the bucket. Insert the other end of the rope into the bucket on the bottom of the shelf. Cover the shelf with the transparent plastic tarp and place bricks on the tarp where it makes contact with the floor, making sure there is little to no air flow during filtration. This is to prevent dust from contaminating the oil.
- 4). Wait three to four weeks as capillary action pulls the oil through the rope, filtering out contaminants in the process. Visibly check on the progress by looking through the tarp but do not under any circumstances remove the tarp until filtration is complete.
- 5). Pour the filtered motor oil from the bottom bucket into clean gallon milk jugs, again using a funnel.
- 1). Find the appropriate ratio of oil to diesel for usage in your vehicle. While one part used motor oil to 99 parts diesel (a 1/100 ratio) is typically used, higher and lower concentrations of oil may be optimal depending on the model of your vehicle. Contact the manufacturer for recommendations.
- 2). Calculate how much filtered motor oil to mix with the diesel fuel. For a 1/100 ratio, mix 0.5 gallons used motor oil with 49.5 gallons diesel in a 50-gallon drum. Alternatively, an oil blending device may be utilized, speeding up the mixing process.
- 3). Store the fuel mixture in an airtight location and use as soon as possible.
- 4). Store the filtered oil mixture for up to a year. After this period of time the oil may begin to break down, making it unsuitable for usage as a fuel additive.
