Diabetes defines who you are and will not own you.
A person controls the diabetes and doesn't let the disease control them.
It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, adversity is all around us and how we respond to it is what builds character.
We can rise above it or succumbed to it; it is our choice.
So you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and the whole world is crashing down on you.
You can't eat that triple chocolate cake and wash it down with a liter of Coke anymore; the world is coming to an end.
You now are insulin dependent and need 4 injections per day and that is a big inconvenience.
Not to mention that when you are in school you will have to take a trip to the nurse's office before lunch to get a shot of insulin; what a drag! I got news for you; life gets a whole lot better.
I will tell you why.
I am not a diabetic but a father of a teenager who does have type 1 diabetes.
His lifestyle has changed and for the better as did mine.
His menu options at home have changed as it did for the entire family.
He lost weight as did I and other family members.
It's funny how when you lose weight there is more pep in your step and your energy level increases.
We are all aware of our health which actually makes us stronger.
After two to three weeks everything becomes habit and accepted.
Your doctor will tell you that exercise is a necessity and believe them when they tell you that.
Exercise has an enormous positive effect on your good health.
A few results of exercise are listed: • Lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol • Lowers blood pressure • Lowers stress levels • Reduces (not eliminate) the need for insulin or drugs Exercise doesn't necessarily mean a trip to the gym but simple task that you put into play can help.
For example, park furthest away when you go to the grocery store or don't use elevators.
You can be very creative when devising a exercising routine.
It is possible to achieve better health than someone who does not have diabetes.
Staying focused and positive is the key to anything you do in order to be successful.
Simple adjustments it all it takes for good health and great confidence.
Being diagnosed with diabetes is not the end of the world but only a new beginning.
The disease will also affect the family and friends around you.
It is ultimately your attitude that will decide whether you rise above it or succumb to it.
The anxiety and adversity is just part of the territory that YOU CAN conquer!
